As for advice he would give to high school and junior high students, Newman said the first thing he would tell them is to work hard.
"One thing that is tricky about being young is, I think it is hard to work hard when you don't know what you are working hard for," he said
"One thing you can say for sure is that if you work really hard and you always excel, no opportunities will be closed off to you," Newman said. "It is hard to predict what you want to do, so the safest route is to do really well in all things you are involved in and you are ensured of retaining the broadest scope of opportunities possible."
Newman also would advise students to take risks and travel, and if possible, attend a college in a different city.
"Take a job in an area that you don't know anything about, and learn something about a culture that you don't know anything about," he said.
All of those things can broaden the mind, and things students never considered possible are opened to them, he said.
"When you take a chance and move out of your comfort zone, I think it is something that has been important for me," Newman said. Read more
